Let's see. What could I possibly have to share with you today? Clearly it's lucite (I am hilarious). A fancy term for what simply can be described as clear plastic. Lucite has been seen in furniture, toys, utensils, and of course- stripper shoes- for decades, but I've been noticing a transparent trend as of late in wearables. Not just for the dress up box- lucite shoes, jewelry, and other accessories pack a funky, unique edge while remaining relatively simple and wearable. Oh that just makes my little heart warm getting to say that. I'm all about the most functional yet exceptional trends. And if you don't believe me about this see-through chic idea- know this, anything that Marilyn sported, must have been cool :)
I'll start with shoes. Always a good place to start, in my opinion. They go on last when dressing, but should be your first priority. So no, lucite + high heels does not have to equal exotic dancer. Big names like Prada, and other brands a little further down the fashion food chain that we poor folk can more easily afford, like Zara, are all showing us how a transparent heel can look funky, modern, and sexy without an ouch of hooch. Okay maybe a little hooch, but where would any good pair of heels be without that?
yum-may!
Zara. So perfect!
Then of course, there's what we usually think of when we think of a clear plastic heel, the infamous "stripper" shoe. The stripper heel has somewhat of an iconographic silhouette. Very 21st century. Anyways despite attempts made by Kat Von D, Taylor Momsen, and some other misguided celebs, I don't believe stripper heels of these caliber quite have their place in the fashion world. Or the world of good taste, better said. Okay in costumes and clubs, not every day. Below are a couple of, uh, fun photos that made me smile or gave me a chuckle whilst adding to my point.
Holy.Crap.
Don't know whether to laugh or throw up a little. I applaud your bravery, Ciara.
Augh, this girl! Mostly I hate that she keeps popping up in my posts! At least this time I get to use her in a "what not to wear" way. I'm sure she knows exactly what she's doing here and what look she's trying to convey. She just has bad taste. No sympathy.
See these things make funny bachelorette gifts, not outfit staples.
Alright next we have lucite jewelry. This might be my favorite use of lucite. The big chunky bangles and rings, shrinky-dink looking charms, etc. are all so funky yet simple. I thought clear plastic jewelry would be an easy thrift store find, but for the past month, I've scoured even the big shops like value village and have unearthed NOTHING. I was so surprised and disappointed. I guess I'll have to resort to an online purchase, which is so disappointing as finding things is so much more fun and feel sort of rewarding. Or if anyone has any they just want to give me, I can settle for that too ;)
I need a pair of these. The metal ones just don't cut it
And lastly, the most unexpected and funky use of lucite I've seen- purses. I am a fan of this super creative new trend and hope it catches on at least in this respect. Not only does it look cool, its perfect for those of us who are nosey and love to see what's in peoples' purses :)
Too cool for words!
Clearly (!) this is a trend you should try on for size. I wish I had a lucite collection of my own to craft some outfits around but no such luck yet. I'll be sure to use them in a post or a shoot if I do acquire some in the future, however. Lucite is a fun way to bare-it-all without having to bare anything. I think because of its transparency (everyone loves seeing skin!) and (shoe-wise) association with dancer heels, these simple chunks of plastic come with an undeniable aura of sexiness and sass.
